As we step into the new year, we extend our warmest greetings to you and your families. May this year bring renewed hope, peace, and joy to each of you, regardless of where you are or the challenges you may face. We are deeply thankful for your continued partnership and support, which remains a lifeline to our mission in Haiti.
In Haiti, the dawn of the new year brings a mixture of reflection and anticipation. As we reflect on the challenges of the past year, we are also filled with a sense of hope for what lies ahead. However, our beloved nation continues to endure unimaginable hardship. The struggles of violence, fear, and poverty remain pervasive in daily life, casting a long shadow over many families and communities.
Over the past year, we have witnessed heart-wrenching acts of violence, such as the recent loss of over 200 elderly individuals in an act of unthinkable injustice. A gang leader, consumed with grief and rage, wrongly accused these men and women of witchcraft, resulting in their deaths. This tragedy is a painful reminder of the deep wounds within our country and the critical need for compassion, justice, and healing in our communities.
Despite the turmoil, we remain steadfast in our mission to bring light into the darkness. As a ministry, we are called to stand in the gap for those who suffer, to offer comfort to the grieving, and to shine the hope of Christ into the darkest corners of Haiti.
Haiti's economic instability continues to weigh heavily on its people. The cost of living is rising rapidly, making it increasingly difficult for families to meet their basic needs. In addition to the ongoing struggle with inflation, the southern region of Haiti still faces the challenge of having no electricity for the past five years. This makes even simple daily tasks a struggle, and yet we hold onto faith, trusting in a sovereign God who is with us in the midst of these trials.
In the face of these challenges, we continue to press forward in our mission. However, the needs are urgent, and we come to you now, humbly asking for your continued support.
Our Current Needs
1. Solar Battery Support
With no electricity since 2017, our mission relies heavily on solar power. We are in need of at least two, ideally twelve, solar batteries to keep our church, school, and mission running. Each battery costs $225.
These batteries are charged by the sun and are essential for running our computers, lights, and phones. This is a critical need that will allow us to maintain communication and continue our vital work.
2. Rising Costs of Living
The price of food, medicine, fuel, and office supplies has skyrocketed. The scarcity of goods and the instability caused by gang violence and political turmoil have pushed prices to unsustainable levels. Our community, already struggling with poverty, is further pressed by these rising costs, and your help can alleviate some of these burdens.
3. Motorcycles for Our Preachers
Our pastors and ministry leaders are dedicated to spreading the gospel, but many of the communities they serve are located in hard-to-reach, rural areas. To overcome the geographical challenges and ensure that the good news of Christ reaches every corner of our region, motorcycles are a crucial need. These vehicles will allow our preachers to navigate rough terrain and get to remote areas to share the gospel with those who are waiting to hear it. Each motorcycle costs $2,000, and your support in providing these essential tools will greatly enhance the impact of our ministry.
4. Radio Transmitter for Outreach
One of our most effective tools for outreach has been our radio transmitter. This vital piece of equipment was lost in the earthquake, along with our hospitality house. The transmitter opened doors to evangelistic outreach and helped us connect with more people across the region. Replacing it would cost $2,500, and this investment would significantly enhance our ability to spread the message of hope and healing.
5. School and Community Support
Our school remains a cornerstone of our ministry, providing education and nourishment to children who would otherwise go without. However, we face daily shortages of food and medicine, and the need for resources to maintain operations is greater than ever. A single bag of rice now costs $100, and we need your help to ensure our students receive the nourishment and education they deserve.
As we face these many challenges, we continue to rely on the generosity and compassion of supporters like you. Your contributions make it possible for us to carry out the work that God has called us to do. We are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you, and we ask that you prayerfully consider making a special gift to Christian Mission South Haiti as we enter this new year.
Your partnership in this mission is a blessing, and we value it deeply. You are the hands and feet of Christ in Haiti, and we thank God for you every day.
Blessings,Jim JohnstonPresident of the BoardChristian Mission South Haiti
