Christian Mission South Haiti Newsletter August 2023
Dear Beloved Supporters,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with the grace of the Lord. It is with heavy hearts that we reach out to you today to provide an update on the current situation in South Haiti and the challenges our community faces. Your unwavering support and prayers have always been a source of strength, and we humbly request your continued assistance during these trying times.
The Dire Political and Economic Crisis
The situation in South Haiti has reached a critical point. The political and economic turmoil has escalated into a disaster that is affecting every aspect of our daily lives. As many of you know, Haiti has long faced political instability, but the recent events have plunged us into an even deeper crisis.
Skyrocketing Food Prices and Fuel Scarcity
One of the most immediate and pressing issues is the skyrocketing price of basic necessities, particularly food. Families in our community are struggling to afford even the most essential items. A combination of factors, including political unrest and a weak national currency, has led to hyperinflation, making it extremely challenging for our fellow Haitians to put food on their tables.
Moreover, the scarcity of fuel has had a crippling effect on transportation, agriculture, and daily life in general. Without fuel, transportation costs have soared, impacting the delivery of goods, access to medical care, and the ability to move freely. Many are forced to walk long distances, and public transportation has become sporadic at best.
A Plea for Prayer
In times of crisis, we turn to the Lord for guidance and strength. We ask for your fervent prayers for our brothers and sisters in South Haiti, as well as for our nation as a whole. The Churches of Christ in Haiti need your prayers now more than ever. Our faith sustains us, and your prayers provide the spiritual support we need to endure these trials.
Health Challenges
The health of our community is also a significant concern. There are many among us who are sick and in need of medical attention. One of our beloved brothers recently experienced a heart-wrenching situation as his son was hospitalized and required surgery. Medical resources are scarce, and the cost of healthcare has risen dramatically. Please join us in praying for the healing of our loved ones and for strength during these difficult times.
Rebuilding Our Churches
In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck our region, our churches remain badly damaged. While we have been able to hold services and gatherings in makeshift spaces, the need for proper church buildings is undeniable. We believe that our faith will help us overcome these challenges, but we also need practical support to rebuild our houses of worship. Your continued support will make a meaningful difference in our ability to strengthen our community through faith.
Transportation for Preachers
The Gospel is a beacon of hope, especially in times of darkness. Our preachers play a crucial role in spreading God's word, but the current fuel shortage and transportation challenges have hindered their ability to reach the farthest corners of our community. We urgently need vehicles for our preachers to continue their vital work, sharing the message of salvation and hope with those who need it most.
Education Challenges
As the opening of primary and secondary schools' approaches, we face another daunting challenge. We lack the means to pay our teachers a fair wage and to provide daily meals to our students. Education is a cornerstone of our community, and we are committed to providing quality learning experiences for our children. Your support can help ensure that our schools can continue to function effectively and provide a brighter future for our youth.
How You Can Help
We understand that these are challenging times for everyone, but we also believe in the power of our community to come together and make a difference. Your contributions, whether financial or in the form of prayers, are deeply appreciated and much needed.
Financial Support: Your financial contributions enable us to purchase food, provide medical assistance, repair our churches, acquire transportation for preachers, and support our schools. Even the smallest donation can make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
Prayers: Please continue to pray for South Haiti, our churches, our community members who are sick, and our nation's leaders. We firmly believe in the power of prayer to bring about positive change.
Spread the Word: Share our mission and the challenges we face with your friends, family, and church communities. Awareness is key to garnering the support we need.
Volunteer: If you have the opportunity to volunteer your time and skills, please contact us. Your expertise and dedication can help us overcome these challenges more effectively.
Closing Thoughts
In times of crisis, the strength of our faith and the compassion of our community shine brightest. We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support and prayers. Together, we can weather this storm, rebuild our churches, support our preachers, and ensure that education and nourishment are provided to our children.
As we face these trials, let us remember Romans 12:12: "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer." We hold on to this hope, and we are eternally grateful for your unwavering support.
May God bless you abundantly for your generosity and love.
In Christ's Service,
